Hermann Albert lives and works in Ronzano, Italy, Braunschweig and München
When Hermann Albert moved to Berlin in 1964, there was a strong feeling among intellectuals, that figurative painitng was defined by the hateful Stalin doctrine that determined how and what artists were supposed to paint: they were to worship the working class and its achievements and they were to do so in portraits, stillives and landscapes in a heroic style. However in West- Berlin a young generation of painters, among them Baselitz, Hödicke, Lüpertz and Albert, thought that figurative art of the 20ies, like German Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit were important painterly traditions of the 20th century and they felt the urge to continue in that tradition. Soon they found support, with more figurative tendancies in American art:, especially pop art, but as well a return to more figuration as one can see in the works of the late Jackson Pollock.Lokking back to the time, it is interesting to see the influence of Tom Wesselmann in Albert's early work, where it is combined with German Neue Sachlichkeit of the twenties and thus leads to another important source of inspiration: pittura metafisica and de Chirico. In the eighties, the isolation of figurative painters from Berlin turns to acceptance. It is only than that Balthus and Klossowski are internationally noticeable, that Garouste in France, Freud and Auerbach in England or Chia, Cucchi, Clemente in Italy are greeted enthousiastically with figuative art. Already than Albert has moved to another sphere of thought. While in his early works he is preoccupied with everyday life, he now moves to a representation of the eternal values in the human condition: beauty, silence, metaphorical expression.
